For those that have followed this blog over time you know that I am very involved in The American Cancer Society Relay For Life. I have a web page at http://main.acsevents.org/goto/jdogg1 where people can make donations. My message is that I am honoring my mother, Judith Miller’s, memory as she was called home to GOD on July 5, 2012. I am doing this to create a world with less cancer and more birthdays. I am using this as a case study as I have raised over $15,000 in the 10 years that I have been a participant. I also have a unique advantage over everyone else in the fact that I am the emcee for the event, which provides me with a great platform to promote myself and secure paying gigs. As of this writing I have raised $898 so far for The 2014 American Cancer Society Relay For Life of West Boca Raton. The model that I am using to maximize my message is proving to be highly effective.
In all my interactions in obtaining monetary and in-kind donations I have incorporated the idea of celebrating, remembering, and fighting back while creating a world with less cancer. By being consistent with the message I have been able to obtain donations and also share the work that The American Cancer Society does. I have been able to create a buzz and create brand awareness and recognition by sending media releases out on a consistent basis. As a Result on 11/10/2013 The Sun-Sentinel ran an article about The POINTS FOR THE CURE FUNDRAISER for Relay For Life. The program is simple you choose your favorite NCAA Football Team or NFL TEAM and after their game you visit http://main.acsevents.org/goto/jdogg1 and donate $.25 per point they scored.
In using graphics, posting on Facebook, Tweeting, posting on Linked, and sharing on Stumble On I have been able to get my message out to people and out of the $898 raised $150 was from on-line donations. Having a consistent message with a high frequency will get the results you are seeking. This process can happen quickly or take time as people really have to resonate with your message before they take action.
I have taken my message to the people by going person to person at local businesses at special festivals and sporting events. I have called this my 3 foot rule as if someone is within 3 feet of me I am going to talk to them if the opportunity arises. I am always wearing something with The American Cancer Society Relay For Life logo when I go collecting. I also carry literature about Relay For Life and other educational materials to help maximize the message.
