Hello Mr. or Mrs. Business Person,

Do you know what this is? It is a phone and it is an integral tool that can either enhance your business or derail it.  How many times have you said oh business is slow and made excuses as to why you are not as successful as you would like to be?  One reason is that you may not be returning calls to those who can be of service and value to you. I have that the lack of returning calls is very prevalent in business today.

As I sat at Starbucks today (5/14/14) working on blog entries and Relay For Life one of my colleagues, Vanessa who is building a new home, sat down and told me how hard it has been to find a shower door person and a pool person and how she has called several and none returned her calls. I said this didn’t surprise me as it has become the norm. We then got to talking about how the same people who didn’t return calls are the same people who complain about how their business is struggling. I would recommend to every business owner or organization that they print a sign and put it prominently in their office that reads RETURN THE DAWN CALL!!!! as a reminder that not returning the call can be costing them business and thus they may be leaving money on the table.

You have spent money to get brand recognition or you have invested time and energy to build awareness of your organization and yet you do not return phone calls. Then you sit and wonder why business is slow or fundraising goals are not being met. Stop wondering and Return The Darn Call.

I recently called Booker T. Washington as The Miami Fury Women’s Tackle Football Team wanted to honor them at a game as Booker T. Washington was named National Champions in Football. I left a message for the athletic director over 1 month ago and still no return phone call. I would think with schools athletic programs needing funding that the athletic director would have picked up the phone and returned the call. I thought wow you cry how you are lacking funds and when someone who can help you calls you don’t return a call. I guess the athletic director didn’t understand the concept or return the darn phone call.  The athletic director most likely will make excuses as we have so many people calling to help I can’t return all the calls. This is not a good excuse for you are in a leadership position and you owe it to your school and the athletes you serve to return the darn phone call. In not returning the call you lost an opportunity to have an ally in the community that has a broad reach.  The idea is to return the darn phone call because you never know how the person on the other end can be of service and value to you.

I am a big supporter of The Relay For Life Program and have been honored as a Hope Award Winner. I recently called the Miami Dade Division on behalf of The Miami Fury Women’s Tackle Football Team as they want to do a special night on June 7 at their football game to help raise funds and awareness for Relay For Life. I left a message and the call wasn’t returned so I called and finally spoke to a coordinator who assured me that a community representative would be calling me, as of today still no phone call. I would think your organization needs money and someone want to help you raise money and you don’t return a call then you wonder why you did not make your fundraising goal. Again I am sure they will say oh I was busy or we held our relay and aren’t planning any more fundraisers. Again a bad excuse as they can fundraise up until 8/31/2014, which is when their fiscal year ends. Think about it they return the darn phone call and coordinate to be at the game on June 7 and collect donations and also get contacts that they can follow-up with for future events but they don’t return the darn phone call and the opportunity to be a charitable partner is given to someone who returned the darn phone call.

This is a question I ask on many occasions because I know that I can be of service and value to the businesses I am calling on. I am amazed by those who complain about how slow things are but when given the chance to change them they choose not to return phone calls.  Each call you return can lead to more business which leads to more money which leads to being able to do that which you want to do. In not returning calls you are losing opportunities and leaving money on the table.

I host a TV Show, The Anything Bucket, which airs on www.wrpbitv.com on Tuesday at 6:30 PM EDT. I call many people to be guests on the show. Those who have called back and booked time to tape a segment have found that by returning that darn phone call they now have an effective platform to use to maximize their message. Those who get the concept of returning that darn phone call have met with success those that do not continue to struggle and need to return that darn phone call.

I called Mr. Gump and he returned that darn phone call and came onto my TV Show. He chose to take the option of buying his clip. He then posted the clip and as a result he signed on a few new clients. So again I urge you if you are in business to make a sign that reads Return That Darn Phone Call as it just may improve your cash flow.
