Media Relations- Delivering Your Message
2011-05-06_14-46-39_161[1] Media Relations Maximize your message
I am often asked JDOGG, How do I get my story into the media? My answer over my 30 years of doing media relations is develop a relationship with the media sources, know who the editor is of your local newspapers and magazines, know the program director at the local radio station, get to know the producers of your TV news and, make friends with as many people with media related platforms as you can. After you build a relationship make sure you are sending them items that are relevant, resonating, and entertaining. For example the photo of me at The Skyline Chili Fundraiser was sent out to media outlets across South Florida with a Caption Love of Mother leads to unique partnership and fundraiser to help those affected by cancer. I sent this out and The Sunrise Forum ran a story on the front page about The American Cancer Society Relay For Life of Sunrise, FL.  Tying things in your business to a charity is a great way to pique the interest of the media.

A Great Event To Shift The Consciousness of the World One Community At A Time

This is a banner that was made for a special event and it was included in all the media releases sent out and in many posts on social media outlets.  I used the following formula to get media coverage and this formula has worked for several clients I have worked with like Octavia Trimm of Butterfly Renewal, Barbara Theodosiou of The Addict’s Mom, and Coach Shantel Smith. Over the years I have utilized this formula to obtain media coverage for several non-profit organizations as well as for myself. Continue reading Advertisement Ideas: How To Get Into The Media!!!!

Advertisement Ideas: How To Build Your Customer/Client Base!!!!

It doesn’t matter if you have a brick and mortar business, and internet based business, or  work from your home in each case there is a common thread needed to insure for your success. That common thread is customers/clients. When I worked for Forum Publishing Company as an Advertising Consultant I was always conscious of the # of clients I had because the more clients I had the more money I made based on the fact that the position was a commission only position. I always made every effort to have  a few smaller accounts, a few medium-sized accounts, and a few big accounts. I treated each account as an important part of my business. In selling of the advertising I became someone who would give my clients ideas because in many cases having someone like myself on the outside looking in can be a major asset as I am not so married to the business. Those that chose to listen and implement the ideas did well while those who were set in their ways seemed to struggle week in and week out. In the 2 1/2 years that I worked at Forum Publishing Group I learned a lot about the business people in my territory, which was Margate and Coconut Creek, Florida. In my initial consultation with a potential advertiser I would always ask how are you building your client/customer base? I usually knew where they were already advertising but I would ask anyway. One thing I learned was to never put down the other publications but to build up the reason they should be in my publications. In building a solid customer/client base you have to be aware of what the potential client wants.

By finding out what your potential clients/customers want you will be able to effectively do a needs analysis and deliver what they are seeking.  I was in a recent meeting of commercial property owners and I asked them what is it they think is keeping their properties from being fully occupied. I heard answers like price, location, the economy, the banks, lack of interest. I asked when was the last time they did an interest intake evaluation? They all looked at me like I was speaking a foreign language. I explained that they all needed to ask their current tenants why they chose to rent or buy property from them, then asked what characteristics they look for when seeking office, warehouse, or retail space? I then used a case study from Jacky Smith’s Book Relevant Selling where she found out that it wasn’t price at all that led to the decision of where to lease or buy property but rather it was security as people wanted to feel they were safe when coming to the location. One landlord implemented a daily security concerns hotline where security issues were addressed as they came up.  As a result of meeting the desires of current and future tenants this developer now has 95% of all his properties full with a renewal rate of 89%. The lesson here is to find out what your target audience wants and then give it to them. Continue reading Advertisement Ideas: How to Build Your Customer/Client Base!!!!!

Advertisement Ideas: How To Choose The Correct Opportunity!

How many times have you used the phrase I am not interested? How many times has your lack of interest cost you business? How many opportunities have you let slipped past you in the last 6 months that could have made a difference in your business? Each day we are bombarded by opportunities and each day we as business people must decide which is the correct opportunity? In many instances we may not have time to look at  or listen an unsolicited proposal so we blow it off and lose out on what could have been a great opportunity. Instead of blowing people off I would suggest stating to someone I would like to talk to you about this however I work on appointments to go over opportunities I have an opening in my schedule on___________ would you be able to speak to me then. A good person will answer yes I can or I have other appointments however  will leave you the information and follow-up with you.  The idea is to be open to receive information as you never know how someone can be of value and service to you. In many cases the people struggling in business are those who do not look at opportunities or seek opportunities.

In his book Soul Currency  Ernest Chu states he asks all that he works with if they are open to receive. He asks this question as he knows that when you are open to receive more opportunities that make sense will be presented to you.  The question remains how do I choose the correct opportunity? The first factor is to see if the opportunity serves you in a positive way. The second factor is does this opportunity put me in front of my desired customer/client? The third factor is doe it make sense financially? By using these 3 factors you can choose the correct opportunity. Continue reading Advertisement Ideas: How To Choose The Correct Opportunity!!!!!

Advertisement Ideas: Put Out Or Get Out!!!

I have been doing marketing and media relations for over 30 years and have lived by the concept of put out or get out.  This concept simply means either you put yourself out there and promote who you are and what you do or you simply get out of your business. Too many people go into business today with out and idea of how they will market themselves and how they will advertise and garner interest in their business.  I was at Starbucks today and overheard a gentleman trying to sell his services to a potential client and he had no marketing materials all he kept doing was talking and talking and telling of all he did. he kept telling stories of his successes however had no testimonials or anything to give to the potential client. The first thing you should have when putting yourself out there is a brochure to give to potential clients or at least a business card that capsulesizes who you are and what you do.

I have written about the three-foot rule in this blog before. It is simple if someone is within 3 feet of you talk to them as you never know where the interaction may lead. Today I overheard a group of people speaking at Starbucks about empowerment. As I walked by them I stopped and said sorry to interrupt but I heard you speaking bout empowerment and wanted to give you my business card, I am Jonathan JDOGG Lederman and I am known as the positive broadcaster, If I can be of help to you in getting your word out please connect with me. By having my business card I was able to make a connection and now it is up to the universe to see what happens. Continue reading Advertisement Ideas:Put Out Or Get Out!!!!

Advertisement Ideas: Why Advertising Should Be Part Of Your Daily Plan!!!!

Today’s post was inspired by Kellie Kuecha as she continues to help others understand the importance of branding and advertising

Kellie’s knowledge of branding is amazing, she has helped so many people to achieve success. She is a well sought after speaker and has grown her own enterprise to be recognizable as a leader in the personal development field. Kellie has taught me that advertising is an everyday walk as the key is to reach your desired target audience and create a tribe of followers who will recommend you to others. Kellie further expounds on why advertising should be part of your everyday plan in her Brand Omnipresence Class. Please visit www.kelliekuecha.com to find out more about how she can help you own your world and strengthen your brand.

Since meeting Kellie Kuecha, who taught me  that you are your brand I have branded and rebranded The JDOGG Name. I continue to understand how important advertising and branding is to be a successful business leader. I ask you what is your advertising strategy?

I was in a $1 store the other day that was closing up shop. I was curious as to why they were closing as I never like to see a business fail. The answer I received was we just couldn’t make it. I asked if they had an advertising plan when they began the business. I was amazed when they said no. I guess I shouldn’t have been surprised because one of the points I make in my workshops if is if you do not advertise you close.  I am often amazed by those who do not have an advertising/branding strategy and then wonder why they are not flourishing. re-branded The JDOGG name. Most recently I changed my moniker from The Spiritual Emcee Maximizing Your Message to The Positive Broadcaster. I did this to better reflect what I do and that is broadcast a client’s message in print, electronic, and social media.  The reason that advertising should be part of your daily plan is that there are always people seeking the products and services you offer and if you do not advertise they may not find you and go to your competitor. Advertisement Ideas: Taking Advantage Of Opportunities!!!

Today’s blog post was inspired by The Pet Shop Boys song Opportunities. As I began to listen to the song I understood that it was talking about collaboration. Collaboration is a an excellent way to maximize your message and also reap the benefits of strengthening your brand and increasing your revenue.  When it comes to advertising sharing the expenses with other businesses makes sense as everyone can get their word out and reap the rewards. Let’s take for example that a FULL PAGE AD in La Bonita Kidz and Teenz, www.labonitakidz.com, costs $500 you can find 4 other businesses to split the costs and each business pays $100 and all 5 of you get maximum exposure with your own message and thus making the advertising affordable.  It is finding ways where everyone benefits that you have the most success.

It is through team work that you can lift other people and thus lift yourself. Think about it you have a sub shop and down the block is a movie theatre. You visit and meet with The General manager and offer them discount coupons to your sub shop and in return they give you FREE Movie passes to give to your patrons. This creates a great cross promotion where everyone benefits and in return both businesses increase their exposure and their revenue. The idea is to look for great opportunities to create abuzz in the marketplace that will benefit everyone involved. The opportunities are endless when you begin to get creative and proactive. Ask yourself what have I passed up in my advertising and marketing as I made excuses to not take advantage of the opportunity. Think of what could have happened had you invested in an offer to pay $140 + tax to La Bonita Kidz and Teenz for a 1/4 page ad and a write up to appear in the magazine and reach 5000 mothers of middle school and high school aged students. You could have leveraged the write-up to build credibility and create interest in your product or services. When making an advertising decision ask yourself what does a client/customer represent to me? Think how many new customers/clients do you need to justify the investment in advertising?  Make sure the advertising is hitting your target audience, do not get fooled by circulation/distribution numbers. There was a local pre-school who decided to get caught up in numbers and bought an ad for $1000 in a publication that is distributed to 50,000 residents not realizing that 42,000 were being delivered to over 55 years of age communities, not exactly his target audience. When making the decision to promote or advertise make sure that the avenue you choose reaches your target audience. Continue reading Advertisement Ideas: Taking Advantage Of Opportunities!!!!

Advertisement Ideas: Plan Your Work And Work Your Plan!!!

The Jaycees is an international organization of young men and women aged 18-40 who provide leadership training through community service to its members. I was a member of The Jaycees from 1989-2002 and again from 2003- 2008. I served in many offices including Chapter President, District Director, Regional Director, State Vice President, State Chairman, and State Director of Training. One of the greatest tools that I acquired in The Jaycees was The Chairman’s Planning Guide, which helped to plan, implement, and evaluate the various projects that The Jaycees held. This tool taught me to plan the work and work the plan. It asked questions like the primary purpose of the project, the goals of the project, who was responsible for certain tasks associated with the project, what the budget for the project was, and the time-table for completion. This tool has been used by many to successfully launch   business.  As I reflected back on the days of my involvement with The Jaycees I realized that in all of our plans their was a marketing component. This made me ask the question to you do you have a marketing plan?  I then asked if not how are you reaching your potential clients/customers?

This is a question all entrepreneurs and marketing professionals must answer. To evaluate this ask where am I marketing, how am I marketing, what returns am I receiving? Many times a business decides to do a print campaign and they try to put everything into their ad and thus it looks to busy and people pass over it. When placing an ad remember a catchy headline a great offer, your contact info. Ask yourself what pain does my product or service take away? Then develop a campaign around that which is consistent with your brand messaging.  In social media and TV and Radio many people try to over power the audience and oversell and thus do not get the anticipated results that they expected. To avoid this remember that facts tell stories sell and use these mediums to engage your audience by having a story that is relevant, entertaining, and resonating.  The most effective way to reach customers is to be where they are. For example if your target demographic is mothers of middle and high school aged students in Broward County you want to check out www.labonitakidz.com and consider being in their Fall Issue with a message as to who you are, what you do, and why people should use your products or services?
