 I have been doing marketing and media relations for over 30 years and have lived by the concept of put out or get out.  This concept simply means either you put yourself out there and promote who you are and what you do or you simply get out of your business. Too many people go into business today with out and idea of how they will market themselves and how they will advertise and garner interest in their business.  I was at Starbucks today and overheard a gentleman trying to sell his services to a potential client and he had no marketing materials all he kept doing was talking and talking and telling of all he did. he kept telling stories of his successes however had no testimonials or anything to give to the potential client. The first thing you should have when putting yourself out there is a brochure to give to potential clients or at least a business card that capsulesizes who you are and what you do.

 I have written about the three-foot rule in this blog before. It is simple if someone is within 3 feet of you talk to them as you never know where the interaction may lead. Today I overheard a group of people speaking at Starbucks about empowerment. As I walked by them I stopped and said sorry to interrupt but I heard you speaking bout empowerment and wanted to give you my business card, I am Jonathan JDOGG Lederman and I am known as the positive broadcaster, If I can be of help to you in getting your word out please connect with me. These 3 companies made news recently for all the wrong reasons. They all had employees or CEO’s that made missteps when speaking to the media. They each have apologized for their statements however nothing changes the facts that disparaging remarks were made.  I used to think it doesn’t matter if you get good publicity or bad as long as your name is being spelled right, however I as a public relations specialist I have learned that it is imperative that a company or individual is seen in a positive light at all times. As a publicist it is your job to make sure your company representatives from The CEO to The Janitor understand that they represent the company and what they say has a direct effect on the business.

 To address the comments of Barilla competitor Ronzoni issued this statement in a twitter campaign. BY being proactive and capitalizing on the idea of a boycott of Barilla Ronzoni saw a spike in sales and thus increased their market share.  In many cases controversy will create cash, however one has to be very careful about their initial remarks. As a publicist it is important to brief your client on the right things to say. Often it is coaching your client to put their political views away and when something a bit touchy or uncomfortable comes up they can defuse the situation by saying we are in the business of—– and we strive to be of service to everyone that use our products or services. By utilizing this statement it protects the representatives of the company from making a statement that they have to apologize for making. So the politicians couldn’t get their heads out of their asses long enough to keep The Federal Government open. This has created quite the stir and buzz around coffee shops like Starbucks and the local barbershop. The chatter across social media such as Twitter and Facebook has been fast and furious with many opinions. As I heard conversations and monitored social media I thought how many businesses would like to have people talking about them? I figured every business could use some for of publicity like The Federal Government, after all it is all about creating a buzz. That is when I came up with the idea of using the shutdown as a theme  in marketing and advertising and thus thought of programs like:

1: While the Government is shutdown enjoy a 10% discount on all products or services.

 I was in a $1 store the other day that was closing up shop. I was curious as to why they were closing as I never like to see a business fail. The answer I received was we just couldn’t make it. I asked if they had an advertising plan when they began the business. I was amazed when they said no. I guess I shouldn’t have been surprised because one of the points I make in my workshops if is if you do not advertise you close.  I am often amazed by those who do not have an advertising/branding strategy and then wonder why they are not flourishing. re-branded The JDOGG name. Most recently I changed my moniker from The Spiritual Emcee Maximizing Your Message to The Positive Broadcaster. I did this to better reflect what I do and that is broadcast a client’s message in print, electronic, and social media.  The reason that advertising should be part of your daily plan is that there are always people seeking the products and services you offer and if you do not advertise they may not find you and go to your competitor. What is on the horizon for you that will propel you to take action and maximize your message?  Have you been wanting to promote your business, however you have held back because of the perception that you can’t afford to or that the perceived risk is too great? I am here to tell you today that it is time to take action and listen to the options that are being presented to you so that you will be on the top of the mind of the consumer when they are ready to purchase your product or service. How many times have you uttered the words I am not interested only to miss out on what is a great opportunity. I run into many people who tell me I am not interested before I even explain what I am offering. The other day I was calling businesses to offer them a FREE 6 minute segment on my Internet TV Show, The Anything Bucket, which airs on www.wrpbitv.com at 8:00 PM EDT on Wednesday. I was surprised by how many people did not want to appear on the show. I heard excuses like I don’t have time to come and tape the show, I have tried internet before and it hasn’t worked, I even had one person tell me I did a show at that station and didn’t see an increase in my sales. I thought to myself you do no have time to take action and  come to the studio to tape a segment that you can show to potential clients. I explained to the person who stated that they tried internet advertising before and it didn’t work for them that this is not advertising it is a TV Show with 48,000 viewers of which 77% are in your local area so you should take action and do the segment so you have something to help build credibility. To the man who said he did a show and didn’t see an increase in sales I didn’t even dignify with a response because if the segment is leveraged properly it will create responses and thus leave the guest in a position to close the deal.

 I am amazed by how many people I will call on in a day to offer them the opportunity to market themselves in ways that are beneficial to their business. I have heard it all I don’t have a budget, I am no interested,  I have done something similar and it didn’t work? I feel like reaching through the phone strangling the son of a gun and saying WAKE UP, I am one of the best at what I do and if you can’t spend $140 on a 1/4 page ad in a magazine geared toward a very desirable target audience you might as well shut the doors.  Let’s do the math I offer 3 months of exposure for $140 to 5000 Mothers of Middle and High School Students in Northwest Broward County. One would think a business would recoup their $140 investment. I recently had a dental office turn me down not understanding what I was offering. I explained that if they were to get one mother and her children to come in for a cleaning that the ad pays for itself. I also offered extra bonuses like shout outs across my social media platforms and on my Internet Radio Show, Get Motivated With Jonathan JDOGG Lederman, which is heard on Monday from 7:00 PM – 8:00 PM EDT.  I also offered to promote the practice when I host special events as I am an emcee. With my connections I certainly could have helped bring in some business. As I left I thought wow another so-called professional who is being penny wise and pound foolish.  I felt like telling the marketing guy hey you just let a great opportunity pass you by because of your lack of vision. I did not but I did get some satisfaction when I saw him in public and asked how the practice is going and he said oh we are a little slow. I said well when your ready to speed it up call me you have my number.  It is with this in mind that I tell the entrepreneurs and marketing executives that are reading this blog that it is TIME TO WAKE UP!!!!!  When you visit www.wrpbitv.com you see this photo as I am The Host of The Anything Bucket, which airs at 8:00 PM EST on Wednesday. A question that I am asked now as a host is why do Internet TV? The answer is quite easy because of the trend that more and more people are looking for alternatives to terrestrial TV and turning to the Internet as a source for their entertainment. This year an Internet TV Show, House Of Cards,  has been nominated in 9 categories for The Emmy’s showing that this medium is a great way to help you to maximize your message.
