84% of consumers surveyed in a recent brand awareness poll, when asked to name who they though of first when sneakers were mentioned stated they think of NIKE. This has led me to ask the question How Strong Is Your Brand? Now you may be thinking NIKe has a strong brand because they spend millions on advertising and marketing and I don’t have a NIKE budget. I am here to tell you that you don’t need a NIKE type budget to strenghthen your brand all need is some working knowledge of the market, who your target audience is and how they are getting their information and making buying decisions.

The American Cancer Society has been a recognized organization helping to create a world with less cancer and more birthdays by strengthening their brand and forming many great partnerships.
The first step in building your brand is to know who you are, what you do, and why people should do business with you. This is usually accomplished by having a defined Mission Statement. For Example The American Cancer Society has a mission statement that states The American Cancer Society is the nationwide, community-based, voluntary health organization dedicated to eliminating cancer as a major health problem by preventing cancer, saving lives, and diminishing suffering from cancer, through research, education, advocacy, and service. This helped them to define their brand and implement marketing strategies that will strengthen the awareness of their organization.
Domino’s Pizza has become a very recognizable brand in the food industry. Over the years they have introduced programs with a variety of messages, however each tine their logo remained consistent. For those of you that in their mid 40’s you will remember the Avoid The Noid Campaign.
The next step is then to develop your logo so that it is recognizable and memorable like Domino’s has done. If you refer to a previous blog entry, How To Use A Logo, you will see the key is to have consistency. Your logo should be the same on your business cards, your promotional literature, on your social media sites, in your print advertising, and anything else that promotes your business.
Many times the choice where to market can be perplexing because of all the choices that seem to be available to you. In an effort to strengthen your brand consider who you want to reach and how large is your budget.
The third step is to formulate a plan of action to strengthen your brand.
One way to strengthen your brand is to participate in networking events and expos. While I attended the event I happened to stop by The Chispa Marketing Table and was very impressed at how they were branding themselves as they had a variety of promotional items such as matches, which at the time I needed to light candles, they also had a MIX CD with their logo that I have now played several times and each time I take it out of the cd holder I see The Chispa name. One of the first things I ask a potential client interested in hiring me for marketing and media relations is do you have a promo video? The answer is often no, I can’t afford a video. Survey says X as you can make a promo video at www.animoto.com by simply joining and registering for the free level and then selecting your photos to use, some text, and a song and then you have your video. I then ask do you have a Youtube Channel? again the answer many times is no. Youtube is a great venue and once you have your channel you can start to make videos to promote who you are, what you do, and why people should do business with you. Once you have the Youtube Channel and you begin to title the videos with key words, use key words in your description, and use tage that people are searching for you will begin to see views of your videos. Once you make the video you can share on your social media sites.
Another question ask is do you have a media list.Again I am surprised to hear no. Building a media list is not a challenge as you can google newspapers, tv stations, radio stations, magazines, and other sources in your area and start to compile a media contact list. Once you gather who the editor at the newspaper magazine is, the program director at the radio station is, and the producers at the tv stations are you can begin to call and pitch your story or reason to be interviewed.When connecting with the media remember to have your story be relevant, entertaining, and resonating.
As you strengthen your brand you will find a few struggles along the way that when faced and overcome will make you and your brand stronger.
Everyday when you open up your business the first question you should is what am I doing to strengthen my brand so when someone asks how strong is your brand you can answer it is strong and getting stronger everyday.
